Narrative of the Young Shepherd

Deep within the captivating rolling fields, lived a shepherd boy. His existence was mostly unadulterated, and unsophisticated. His only responsibility was essentially to tend to his herd of sheep.

Their low murmuring and the whispering of the gales across the solo tree on the hilltop were his only companions. Day upon day, looking out for his responsibilities imbued in him a sense of calm satisfaction.

However, there were at times moments of loneliness, when the shepherd boy would pine for fellowship. During one such occasion from sheer monotony, the shepherd boy devised a troublesome plan.

Tales of predators prowling on sheep had long been circulating in the town. So, the boy chose to used this fear and played a joke on the townsfolk.

One morning he ran into the village screaming “Wolf! There is a wolf attacking my sheep!” The terrified villagers ran up the hills to help but discovered nothing threatening.

The boy laughed at the puzzle on their faces. This trick persisted for a few days more. Yet, one day, a real wolf did come to prey the grazing sheep. The shepherd boy raced for aid screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.

Frustrated and alone, the boy fought against the wolf but managed to rescue only few of his sheep. Heartbroken, he went back to the village only to be met with a reprimand on honesty and the consequences of dishonesty.
